Surgical Services in Gettysburg
Experience, Expertise, and Compassion
Taking your pet in for surgery can be an overwhelming experience. You love your pet and want to be by their side as they’re treated, but the reality is that pet owners need to be separated from their companions during the procedure. At Confederate Woods Veterinary Hospital, our Gettysburg veterinarians hope to relieve you of your worries through compassionate care. We can prepare you for the procedure in the weeks and days leading up to the surgery and help you create an aftercare plan to speed up your pet’s healing process. Whether your companion needs to be neutered or operated on to remove a tumor, we are available to walk you through each step at your own pace.
Contact us online or by phone at (717) 610-6223 if you have any questions or concerns regarding our surgical or anesthetic procedures. We understand you’re concerned about the safety of your pet and are more than happy to help you achieve peace of mind.

What Should I Expect on the Day of Surgery?
On their scheduled day of surgery, we typically admit pets to our hospital between 8 and 9 in the morning. We instruct that your pet should not be fed the night before surgery after 6. We are happy to admit your pet to our hospital the day before surgery for convenience if your schedule does not permit a morning appointment.
The technician who will be attending to your pet’s needs throughout the day will discuss the surgical plan for your pet and discuss the pre-anesthetic tests recommended by the doctor, which are most commonly blood work to assess your pet’s metabolic health and an EKG to ensure your pet’s heart health.
While we understand if you want to bring a special blanket or toy for your pet, keep in mind that personal items are likely to become soiled. We have comfortable bedding at our hospital, and your pet’s well-being is our top priority.
Can I Call or Visit My Pet in the Hospital?
We welcome you to call to check on your pet at any time. The surgery technician who is attending to your pet will call you once your pet is recovering from their surgical procedure. We can also send you text updates if you prefer. For many of our surgical procedures, we discharge our patients the same day their surgery is performed. If we recommend an extended hospital stay for your pet after surgery, visits are permitted. If you wish to visit your pet, please inform the surgery technician so arrangements can be made to ensure the best care and comfort.
It's important to note that we do not have 24-hour care at our facility. If our doctor recommends intensive care for your pet, we will refer your pet to one of the emergency and referral hospitals in our area.
When Can My Pet Go Home?
We discharge our patients by appointment with your pet’s surgery technician, primarily in the afternoons after 4, Monday through Thursday. The time of your pet’s discharge will vary depending on our surgery schedule and the nature of your pet’s procedure.
Our Gettysburg hospital provides scheduled surgical services on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, and our emergency surgical services are every day from Monday to Friday between 8 and 6, and on Saturday between 8 and 12 in the afternoon.
